Efforts to reduce language barriers in health care services

A recent study conducted in Los Angeles hospitals reveals the struggles faced by the estimated 2.5 million residents who have trouble expressing themselves in English or understanding the language. The study uncovers an astounding number of misdiagnoses, unnecessary medical procedures and delays in offering life-saving medical assistance, all due to the communication difficulties between patients and medical staff.

Big boys sometimes need a helping hand too

While English is without doubt the most global language in the world and the closest we have nowadays to a lingua franca, some people feel it needs to be protected. In Oklahoma, a new bill will reportedly be pushed forward to make English the only official language in the state.  

This measure, proposed by a known anti-immigration lawmaker, Republican Randy Terril, would mean that all the state’s official business should be conducted in English only, thus cutting state government translation and interpreting costs.

The measure would also encourage all immigrants to learn English, being the only language they could use to communicate with the administration. The idea of an English only administration is not new, a similar bill was declared unconstitutional by Oklahoma’s Supreme Court in 2002 because it was judged to infringe upon the right to freedom of speech.
