 A worrying turn of events has developed in Gatineau, a French-speaking town near Ottawa. This town, the fourth most populated city in Canada, has in recent years seen an increase in the number of permanent residents who cannot speak French, and this has spurred a local civic association, the Regional Association of West Quebecers, to officially demand that the city issues translations of bylaws of general interest.

Maria Reimondez, the Galician translator of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, a book that won the Whitbread Book of the Year award in 2003, was sacked for allegedly breaching her contract with the book’s publishers, Rinoceronte Editora.

As Irish taxpayers discovered in the £3 million bill they were presented with last month, a multicultural society has its price. The sum represents the total amount spent on translation and interpreting services over the past five years (2003-2007), and the costs have increased during the period examined. While this sum also includes the money spent on language services for people with visual and hearing disabilities, the majority of the money was used to pay for foreign language translation and interpreting. A translated version of the encyclical Spe Salvi was presented a few days ago in Moscow, in a ceremony attended by Father Vladimir Shmalij, Secretary of the Synod Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Patriarchate and by Catholic Archbishop Paolo Pezzi. The ceremony took place at the “Library of the Spirit”, an institution founded jointly by the Catholic “Christian Russia” Foundation and the Orthodox Centre of Sts. Cyril and Methodius of Minsk, which seeks to promote inter-confessional dialogue.
