Egypt promotes Arabic as a common linguistic medium in Africa

Egypt recently made a large donation of Arabic language learning materials, teaching aids and Arabic cultural heritage paraphernalia to the Nigerian Arabic Language Village (NALV) in Borno State. The donation is reckoned to be worth several million Nigerian Naira (currently 1 GBP = around 215 NGN) and will also be supplemented by a series of week long Arabic language lectures for both teachers and students.

US legal bottleneck in the offing

US lawyers representing detainees at the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have voiced their concerns that representation for the 265 prisoners there is likely to be severely handicapped in future due to an unexpected legal bottleneck…a shortage of interpreters.

Bible sparks translation controversy

Now anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the history of the Bible will know that translations of the Bible have, in the past, caused their fair share of controversy and strife; take for example John Wycliffe’s translation of the Vulgate from the Latin into the English or, indeed, Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible into the common German dialect.

Linguist’s achievements recognised in Honours List

It is always gratifying to see people’s selfless efforts with community based projects being recognised and as linguists, it is all the more gratifying to see fellow linguists being so recognised. It is just such a selfless community based contribution that will see an Army linguist rewarded in this years Honours List. Sixty three year old Major Peter Barlow is to receive an MBE for his contributions toward rebuilding war-torn Kosovo.

Marathon Lexicographical work moves ever onward

Poland and Denmark shame the Western Coalition

We have commented before, that the most dangerous job in the world for an interpreter has got to be that of a native Iraqi interpreter working with coalition forces in Iraq. Within the last five years alone some 310 such interpreters have been killed and the fear of murder is a daily reality for all such interpreters.

An ingenious open source language aid

Users of UNIX and Linux Operating Systems will already be more than aware of the utility of the open source concept, after all, it is this concept that has enabled these systems to evolve and for so many applications and patches to be written for them. Now though, the open source concept has thrown up a handy little utility for the popular Nintendo DS.

New translation receives holy seal of approval

A new translation of “Osservatore Romano” has received the personal approval from no less a personage than Pope Benedict XVI himself. The translation into the Malayalam language, which is the primary language used in the State of Kerala in Southern India, is “highly significant” according to the Pope as it will “deepen the faith of those Catholics who read the publication” in Kerala and neighbouring Goa and is anticipated to reach over 6 million Catholics.
